The Institute's Annual Conferences have been held since 1970 when they began life as the Annual Study Course. They present an opportunity to learn from authoritative experts, present new developments and meet traders, but particularly to make contacts and discuss fisheries management matters that are useful to you.
Proceedings of the conferences have been issued in most years since 1979. Although not peer reviewed they represent a useful literature source, quite often about matters that are not published elsewhere. Lists of past proceedings are given in these pages and abstracts and full papers will gradually be added. Meanwhile, copies of past proceedings are available for purchase.
A poster session now forms part of the conference, allowing work that is not appropriate for a full paper to be described. At Cardiff in 2004 the poster session carried a substantial prize and led to a large increase in entries. Abstracts from these posters have been included in the proceedings, issued for the first time on CD-ROM. In Salford in 2005, we also revived the Good Fisheries Management award as part of the conference.
A high profile guest speaker is invited to the Annual Dinner to raise issues of current important or controversial issues. The occasion is also used to present awards to Certificate and Diploma prize winners, thank our guests and organisers of the conference and as another opportunity for networking in a social gathering.
Our next conference will be held from 3rd to the 5th of October 2012 in the Barcelo Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh. It will be organised by Scottish Branch on the theme of Evidence Based Fisheries Management.
