By the time of the conference a new Fisheries Bill for England and Wales started making its way through the parliamentary process (but ran out of time). North of the border in Scotland the Scottish Executive had recently consulted on their Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill. These important bills could bring important changes in the way that our salmon and freshwater fisheries are regulated and managed in the future.

These long overdue changes are urgently needed to bring fisheries management into the 21st century. But while they are needed to address some of our big challenges, there is much that has been achieved. Surely it's not all doom and gloom! It's a good time to look back at, and celebrate, the successes that we have made in recent years. At the same time let's look at where we have failed and how we plan to tackle these failures.

Because of the close links and interdependencies we decided that the theme of successes and failures should extend to cover both fisheries and conservation. The conference was structured around the following sessions:

  • Developments in Legislation
  • Fisheries & Conservation interactions
  • Partnerships
  • Land Use & Abuse
  • Fish Stock Management
