The implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) (WFD) in the UK has driven the need to review the operation of many artificial impoundments of rivers and lakes, in terms of how controlled releases of water meet environmental objectives in the river water bodies downstream.

Much attention has been devoted to understanding when and how much water should be released from impoundments to meet environmental objectives. However, there are many interacting factors to consider and scientists do not always agree on the preferred approach, or indeed the preferred solution. This can lead to confusion and frustration for site owners.

This joint event with the north west branch of the Institute of Fisheries Management aims to present and investigate alternative viewpoints on the provision of environmental flows downstream of impoundments.

Guest Speakers:
Daniel Cadman CWEM, CSci, MSc (APEM)
Dr Nigel Milner BSc (Hons), PhD, FIFM, CEnv (APEM and Bangor University)
