London & South East Branch
The London Branch, as it’s usually termed, has a long unbroken history after being formed in 1971. Our membership has grown over the years and consists of a wide range of people including Environment Agency staff, local commercial fishery owners, fisheries consultants, water utility professionals, institutional academics and students.
After peripatetic early years, we were fortunate, in the mid 1970s, of being allowed to use the magnificent Fishmongers’ Hall in London as a regular meeting venue. We now alternate meetings with Kings College, Waterloo, where we have a strong relationship with the Aquatic Resources MSc Course. We regularly hold 6 evening meetings a year, including our famed “Sherry Evening”, an annual social event with fine wines and a buffet in the magnificent Court Dining Room. We also organise a number of trips which invariably includes an early morning guided tour of Billingsgate Fish Market, but also to such as the Nausicaa Aquarium at Boulogne, the fish collection at the Natural History Museum and the new managed-retreat saltmarsh in Essex. We’ve also run a number of workshops for angling clubs, fishery managers and local Authority park and recreation staff. The Branch has hosted three Annual Conferences at London’s City University, Greenwich University and the week-long extravaganza at Royal Holloway College to celebrate the Institute’s 25th Anniversary.
