Fisheries Management

For the Institute, the term ‘management’ encompasses interventions on the fishery (social and economic), the fish (biological) and the environment (physical. In geographic terms the Institute deal with the problems of management in marine and estuarine waters as well as freshwater and also cover aquaculture in so far as this affects wild and managed fish stocks.

Fish can be taken to include finfish, shellfish and crustacea of food, recreational and conservation interest. All management policies and activities should be sustainable at the level of the fish, the fishery and the environment and should include employment, food, recreation and conservation. The geographic limits of the Institute are those of the British Isles, although the Institute should collaborate closely with similar institutions in Europe and globally.
