Chartership

The Institute, in partnership with a number of other UK institutes and societies concerned with the environment, is one of the Constituent Bodies of the Society for the Environment (http://www.socenv.org.uk/). The Society now has a Royal Charter and is empowered to award the qualification of Chartered Environmentalist.

The IFM is licensed to grant this qualification and all Registered and Licentiate Members can apply following procedures laid down by Council. The qualification recognises responsibility for sustainable environmental management and is important for employment.

How to become a CHARTERED ENVIRONMENTALIST

Chartered Environmentalist is offered by the Society of the Environment to those members of its constituent bodies who occupy the professional grades of membership. The award will be available to IFM members who are in the Registered and Licentiate categories and are able to meet the requirement of SocEnv. Successful applicants will be those who can demonstrate that they have acquired a high standard of expertise in their field through academic study and/or substantial and varied practical experience. They will also be able to show that they are fully engaged in the practice of sustainable environmental management.

For the first year following the granting to the IFM of a licence to award CEnv, which was given on 29 November 2004, members will be able to apply through a short form process, known as Grandparenting, in which they will be invited to complete a simple application form to demonstrate their sustainability credentials, along with a CV of their career achievements. Institute assessors, who have been confirmed by the Registration Authority of SocEnv, will consider applications according to criteria laid down by the Society.

An application fee, Registration Fee and Annual Subscription to SocEnv will be charged upon acceptance and the IFM will collect all fee relative to CEnv. Those members who become a Chartered Environmentalist will have to undergo Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to maintain their chartered status.

The Grandparenting period for application for CEnv has now expired and we will be aubjecting all new applicants to the Full process which will require you to prepare a report and to attend a professional review interview.

Acquisition of the CEnv qualification shows that the holder belongs to a select group, whose commitment to the environment has been recognized by their peers. It will enable employers to distinguish those who have developed their environmental skills and have demonstrated their enthusiasm to embrace the concept of sustainability in their working and personal lives. Several major employers have indicated their readiness to use the qualification to assist in their recruitment and training of staff, and holders of CEnv are expected to have a distinct advantage in securing employment. The Society is expected to grow rapidly in stature and reputation.

Application

The application process for Chartered status comprises two phases. The first is a written submission to the Institute as detailed in the guidance notes. Should the membership Committee decide that this reaches the required standard you will be invited for an interview to present the contents of the report to a review panel. This will last about an hour and will be held wherever possible in your geographical area.

Please read the following documentation before completing and submitting the application form.
